Chapter One: Taking Off - Staying in Kyoto.

We were a mixed-bag at the tatami-matted guest-house in Kyoto.

An American-born, Australian-resident with polish ancestry was teaching English in Osaka.

A Shanghai-born, lived-in-Japan-for-fifteen-childhood-years, Swedish-resident-since-the-war had come to relive those early years for a month.

Two young Swiss lads made vocabulary cards to improve their college studies in Japanese.

An American-born, former-American-resident was to spend the following night in a monastery before joining a religious sect.

A Swiss-girl from Basle spent most of the evening talking to the boys from Zurich in English before she realised their common tongue (it was more interesting to her that they were learning Japanese than where they were from). And me. The girl worked in Tokyo. I was just passing through.
